With the launch of my new lifestyle category I thought it was fitting to start with something I have always been super passionate about: interior design. Apartment decorating has always been one of my favorite things in life; in fact, when I was younger I wanted to be an interior designer.
The apartment I am living in is one I put a lot of TLC into! I am a bit sad, because soon Christoph and I will be leaving this apartment to relocate back to the USA. Before we paint the walls and pack up our bags I wanted to share my top 10 favorite design aspects of our apartment. Perhaps you will even use some of these ideas in your house! Let me know what you think either in the comments below or by getting in touch on social media!
1. Decorate your kitchen with 3D frames
Before living in this apartment I never really saw the kitchen as being a place for decorating. But, our kitchen had a ton of empty white wall space and it was driving me crazy! So, we came up with the idea to hang some food themed photos in the kitchen using 3D frames. I first made a collage of photos and then placed some food related items into the frames. I used spices, cinnamon sticks, and bay leaves for one frame. In the other I used wine corks from bottles of wine we drank. Super easy and cute way to brighten up your kitchen space!
2. Utilize or create loft space
I’m a huge fan of lofted spaces and glad the Germans are too! My first time having a lofted space was when I got my first apartment in college. Sharing a tiny room with two people makes you get creative!
When we moved into this apartment in Germany I was happy to see that the previous tenant had built an awesome lofted bed in our living room. The lofted area for us was mostly a place to hang out, or used for guests. Since it was quite a big space, we put a bunch of pillows and little LED lights which was a cozy place to chill out in the winter. We also found the perfect couch to fit below the lofted bed. It is definitely one of the coziest areas of our apartment!
3. Find creative ways to brighten up bathrooms with no windows
Our bathroom has no windows in it, and when we first moved in it was so dark. But, there was a lovely tub inside of it, and I was determined to make it a space worthy of taking relaxing baths in!
To brighten the room up I had a couple of ideas. First, I knew we had to do something about the ceiling lamp which was old and barely letting any light out of it. I also had the idea of putting wall stickers on the bare white areas of the bathroom to give the room some color. While looking around at Ikea I found these cute bird stickers and felt they would look great in the bathroom to add a pop of color. I then found a ceiling lamp that was shaped like a bunch of leaves and had enough bulbs in it to really make the room look brighter.
Finally, my boyfriend and I decided to redo the mirror area above our sink. We found a cool frame and placed mirror glass inside to use as our mirror. Then we replaced the lamp above our bathroom sink with an awesome LED one that we knew would add a bit more brightness as well. The end result? A bathroom definitely worth taking baths in!
4. Have a swing in your house
Swinging was always one of my favorite things to do on the playground as a child. I always dreamed of hanging a swing in an apartment of mine, and this time we found a way to do just that! Sitting in the swing is so relaxing and calming. I find that having it is a great way to let my inner child out. We still need to have fun as adults! On top of that it’s a handmade one produce organically and under fair conditions in Sri Lanka!
5. Find creative ways to display your jewelry
I have always loved accessorizing. I have tons of necklaces, earrings and bracelets. The only problem? Figuring out how to display them. After scouring the internet for hours I came up with a couple DIY ideas of how to display my jewelry. I wanted to have the entire theme for our bedroom to be cohesive so I decided on a rustic, woodsy look.
I enlisted the help of my boyfriend to get this job done. We came up with the idea to use branches for my necklaces and bracelets, and we collected them from the woods around Bonn.
For the necklaces, we found one very large branch that we drilled into the wall. We then put small nails into the branch, where the necklaces could hang from. I realized afterwards that my statement necklaces were not going to hang well from the branch, so I just hung them from the wall using nails.
The bracelet display area was put together by finding a large vase for the branches we found. Then I just placed my bracelets on the branches spacing them out enough so I could easily grab them without any of them falling off.
Figuring out how to display my earrings was another fun creative project to work on. I saw a great idea to display earrings using a frame and lace on another blog. I first found a beautiful old frame at an antique store. Then I went to the fabric store to find the right lace to use for the earrings. I simply nailed the lace into the frame and then stuck my earrings in. This is a simple yet chic way to display your earrings!
6. Hide wires with DIY wall art
Instead of putting our TV on a stand we wanted to mount it to the wall. The thing was, that meant having a super ugly wire hanging from the TV down to where the adapter was. I decided to paint a vine of flowers onto the wall to camouflage the wire. If you choose to do a project like this, you could always use wall stickers as well!
7. Paint a chalkboard wall to express your inner creativity
Who says chalkboards are only for school? I saw the idea of having a chalkboard wall on several blogs and thought it was a great way to utilize this large empty white wall we had in the corner of our living room. We used chalkboard paint to cover the wall and when it was dry it was ready to be written and drawn all over! We bought chalkboard markers in order to save the huge mess on the floor from chalk dust. Definitely a super fun way to liven up any room that you can redecorate every so often with anything your heart desires!
8. Make canvases with mementos from your life
Christoph and I did a long distance relationship the entire time I was working at Emirates and he was in Germany. On my layovers, I would try to send him a postcard from every place I went to. When I moved to Germany, I wanted to do something with all the postcards rather than just have them sit in a drawer somewhere. So I put them together onto a canvas that we displayed in our hallway. This is a great way to display mementos you have saved.
9. Print your own photos on canvas
For our bedroom, we had the idea to use some photos from my travels as the pictures to hang in our room. Since we already had a grey and black color scheme going on we chose photos from my trip to The Great Wall of China. We decided to use several different sizes and put shelves below them. I find this is another great way to display your memories in your house!
10. Get creative with your closet space
I must admit, figuring out a way to store our clothes was not easy. For several weeks I had all my things placed on the floor in our living room. It was pretty awful!
We went to Ikea several times before deciding on how we would store our clothes. We found this great wardrobe that could be customized with different drawers. I personally like to hang most of my clothes, so we made sure to have ample space to do that. Finally, instead of just having a shoe rack, we used storage cubes for our shoes and my handbags. On top of the wardrobe we used LED lights which really brightens up the entire area making it easy to get ready at night.
