I love playing with makeup; it has always been one of my favorite hobbies for as long as I can remember. Before YouTube existed I would sit in front of my mirror and create different makeup looks. I must admit, I have come a long way from my thick pencil lined eyes and badly applied foundation. I’m no Wayne Goss or Lisa Eldridge, but I do think I have learned many practical skills about applying makeup that I would like to share with you!
I love the summer but it is not always easy to apply the right makeup during this time! A few years ago I used to live in Dubai where the summertime temperatures can reach well over 100°F. Living in that kind of heat helped me to find the best tips for summertime makeup. So here are my top 10 tips that should help you looking fabulous even in the blistering heat!
1. Stick to a lighter foundation or use tinted moisturizer
In the summer I prefer to use powder foundations. For me, the coverage is a bit lighter and it also helps to stop the shine on my t-zone. Otherwise, I love using tinted moisturizers. I look for one with SPF inside of it, and that helps to even out my skin tone. My favorite one I’ve found so far is my Laura Mercier one.
2. Apply a mattifying primer
Primers are great because they help to extend the wear of foundation on your skin. They also help to minimize the appearance of pores and blur fine lines. All you need is a pea sized amount for your entire face. If you get super oily in the summer months like I do, then you can look for a mattifying primer to help reduce shine.
3. Glow with illuminizer
Illuminizers are one of my favorite products for the summer! Using them gives you a beautiful glow to your skin, which looks wonderful when you have a tan. I like to use mine on my cheek bones to highlight. I also like to mix it in with my foundation, or moisturizer for a dewy, illuminated look.
4. Apply bronzer
I apply bronzer nearly all year round. But, the summertime is when I can bust out my darker colors and have a bit of fun! So far my favorite bronzers are made by the brand Too Faced. I like using a looser brush to apply my bronzer; I find that denser brushes are a bit too heavy for a light sun kissed look. If you are curious about how to apply bronzer, then check out this video.
5. Experiment with bright lip shades
Ditch your dark, matted lip colors and opt for brighter, lighter lip shades! I love wearing glosses in the summertime. I usually wear less makeup in the summer, so I find choosing a bright lip gives a nice pop of color.
6. Play with colorful eyeliners
Again, ditch your dark smoky eyes and opt for brighter eye looks. I love using colorful eyeliner in the summertime. One of my favorites is this azure blue liquid eyeliner. If I choose to do an eye look, then I like to use my brighter colors as well. Dark colors on your lids can totally dull a summertime look. Save those eye looks for the winter months. For the summer, think bright and eye-opening!
7. Use setting powder for your t-zone
I love having glowy skin. But, in the summer sun I can get super oily and it is not a good look! I like to dust a loose setting powder onto the t-zone of my face.
8. Go lighter on your mascara
Sweating outside can be a mess for mascara! There is nothing worse than looking into a mirror and realizing you have tons of black flecks underneath your eyes. To avoid this, I usually just lightly coat my eyes with mascara in the summer. Of course you could always look for a waterproof mascara as well.
9. Choose cream blush
Applying powder blush during the summer can make you look cakey. Instead of choosing powder blushes, opt for cream ones instead. Cream blushes are really easy to apply once you get the hang of them. Just pick up a little product and rub off the excess on the back of your hand. Apply it using light stippling like touches where you usually apply blush. I’ve found the best way to do this is using a small stippling brush. I like to apply it on my cheekbone and then quickly blend concentrating on the apple of my cheek.
10. Skip the contouring, highlight instead
This is just a personal thing I like to do in the summer. As you can probably tell, I like to go for a dewy, bronzed look instead of a contoured face. Save your shadowy contour colors for the fall and choose to use a shimmery highlighter for the summer. In the summer, I like to highlight my cheekbones, cupid bow, eyebrow arches, forehead, bridge of nose and chin. It seems like a lot, but it is really just enough to keep me glowing and looking radiant!
