A couple of weeks ago I wrote one post called How to Create Your Dream Life and another called The Truth About Finding Your Life Purpose. In those posts, I wrote that I do believe that each of us has a reason we are here on this Earth. We all have a life purpose, which varies from person to person. Our life purpose is something that is in us all along—whether we know it early on in life or discover it later.
But, what comes after we find our life purpose? How do we actually fulfill it? Is there only one way to reach our life purpose or can we take many roads to get there? Those questions are the ones that I have been contemplating over the past few years. Now I would like to share my thoughts about how we can fulfill our life purpose. These thoughts I am sharing are just my opinion, and I am completely aware that some of you may totally disagree with what I am saying. If you have a different opinion on the topic, I would love to hear your input. Please do share your thoughts in the comments below!
Searching for my dream job while trying to fulfill my life purpose
When I was growing up I knew quite a few people who were determined to have a certain job from a young age. They wanted to be doctors, lawyers or music producers. I watched them meander down their path working towards their goal and eventually saw them reach it.
I hoped that I would eventually be like these people too. When I was younger, I never had a clear idea of what I wanted to do with my life. Well, actually, at some point I definitely thought I was going to be the next Britney Spears—but when I realized I was too shy to actually sing in front of a lot of people I knew that was never going to happen!
In my early twenties I started to feel the pressure to find my life purpose and find a job that would allow me to fulfill it. I had pieces of a puzzle I was trying to put together. I knew I was an empathetic listener. I knew I wanted to help people personally develop and grow into the best version of themselves they could be. I wanted to pass on my positivity to the world. I read books on personal and spiritual development by authors like Eckhart Tolle and wanted to be like them too.
The thing was, back then, I was so determined to find this one job that was going to allow me to fulfill my life purpose. I was reading books on mindfulness and living in the present moment, but I was not really being mindful. I was always waiting for the big moment when things would click into place, and felt frustrated for things not coming together sooner.
But, in life, you can’t stay stagnant. So, I just started to attempt different things and waited to see what happened. I worked at my favorite makeup store. I did a neuroscience research internship. I taught English to kindergartners in Germany. I worked as a flight attendant for an international airline. Now, I am working as an ESL teacher for adults.
Many people would look at me and think that I have no clear direction in my life. Perhaps in a conventional way that is true. But, in terms of fulfilling my life purpose, I can tell you I truly do believe I have figured things out for myself.
Is there really only one way to fulfill our life purpose?
As I approach my thirties, I look back at all my experience and I feel happy to have had them. The thing is, only now have I realized that we can fulfill our life purpose in more than one way. Yes, sure, there are some people who know their life purpose from a very early age and live a life of their dreams by the time they are in their twenties. But, for many—if not most people—that sort of insight does not come easily. If you are like me, you will head down many different paths trying to figure out the right way for you. This is totally normal. Part of fulfilling our life purpose is doing just that! At some point, I definitely do think things will click in place if you keep on trying to put the puzzle pieces together. This is why we must listen and follow our intuition.
Identifying and fulfilling your life purpose
First of all, I want to state that our biggest purpose of life is being fully present and living our lives. We should be grateful for the ability to wake up and see the sun, or hear the birds chirping. This is the greatest gift we will ever have in my opinion.
Beyond the beautiful gift of life, I do believe we all have a reason for being on this Earth. Some people may be here just to experience life. Others may be called to the path of service. Or the path of healing. We all have a life purpose. Never forget that! You yourself must spend some time being introspective in order to figure out what your purpose is. I have made a YouTube video that will help you start figuring out what your purpose in life is.
Once you identify your life purpose, do not stress so much about finding a dream job to fulfill it. Share your passion with the world and remember that it is not about reaching your final destination, but about learning to enjoy the process of getting there. As long as you are working or doing something in life where you feel you are fulfilling your life purpose you will be happy. This can definitely be achieved in more than one way.
We must be true to who we are. There is no right or wrong path for us as long as we know deep in our hearts we are headed in the right direction. Only you will know if you are on the right path or not. Some people may realize their purpose in life was to make the journey through life itself. Others may feel driven to leave a legacy behind them. No matter what path you choose or where you end up, just remember it is all perfect just the way it is!
